Hi everyone,

Welcome to the course blog for EAST 314: Colonial and Postcolonial Modernity on Film.

This space is for your reflections on the course material. While one post per week is required, you can post as much as you like. In fact, I encourage you to respond to your classmates' reflections too, and to pose questions when you're reading/thinking, as they arise. I also encourage you to include images, video, and links in your posts. 

The requirements for the blog are rather flexible. Simply put, your posts should demonstrate thoughtful engagement with each week's materials. More concretely, this involves exploring some aspect of the film, with reference to one or more of the week's readings. You may do this by closely analyzing a particular shot, sequence of shots, scene, or even a striking visual image from the film, or by looking at recurrent motifs or narrative elements, as a way of opening up the larger stakes of the film's depiction of the historical or social context. Isolating particular passages or arguments by the authors of the secondary texts, and pairing them with the your observations about the films, may also be a useful strategy.
